Experienced point guard joins UW as transfer
MADISON, Wis. – Nick Boyd, a veteran point guard with three NCAA tournament appearances on his resume, has signed with the Wisconsin men's basketball team, head coach Greg Gard announced Tuesday.Â
Last season with San Diego State, Boyd earned second-team Mountain West Conference honors as he led the Aztecs in scoring with a career-best 13.9 points per game while averaging 3.9 assists per contest, a career-high. The 6-3 guard also averaged 3.9 rebounds per game while leading SDSU to the NCAA tournament. Boyd authored a pair of 20-point games last season, scoring 23 against Gonzaga and 24 vs. Boise State.
"We are thrilled to add someone as talented and experienced as Nick," Gard said. "He is a big-time leader and winner and we know he'll fit into our locker room from day one. He's been on the biggest stage, starting for Florida Atlantic's 2023 Final Four team and played a lot of high-level basketball. Everyone we talked to throughout the process stressed his tremendous leadership and his ability to impact winning. He wanted to test his game at the highest-level and add to a program with a winning culture. We think this will be a great fit for both Nick and Wisconsin."
"I'm thrilled to play at Wisconsin," Boyd said. "It's my last year and I wanted to finish up my career at a place where I'll be able to showcase my skills at a high level in the Big Ten Conference. The coaching staff here has been together for a long time and most of them have playing experience here too, which spoke volumes to me about the culture."Â
Prior to his time with San Diego State, Boyd spent four years at FAU, leading the Owls to a pair of NCAA tournament appearances.Â
In his final season with Florida Atlantic in 2023-24, he was limited to 27 appearances and 14 starts due to injury, but still averaged 9.3 points per game while leading the Owls to the NCAA tournament for the second-straight year.Â
His most memorable season with the Owls was in the 2022-23 season as he helped FAU to the 2023 NCAA Final Four. The Garnerville, New York, native had the game-winning layup in FAU's 66-65 win against Memphis, securing FAU's first-ever win in the NCAA tournament. Boyd also had 12 points and grabbed 8 boards in a Sweet 16 win and added 12 points in a Final Four setback to SDSU. Boyd ended the year averaging 8.9 points per game and shot 40.0 percent from three-point range.Â
Prior to a redshirt season in 2021-22, Boyd averaged 5.1 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 23 appearances off the bench for FAU.Â
Boyd graduated from St. Mary High School in Rutherford, New Jersey, where he scored 1,000 points at St. Mary in only 41 games. He was named the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference Player of the Year his senior season. Boyd spent two years at Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey, New Jersey prior to his time at St. Mary as he helped Don Bosco to a 57-6 record. He also spent a year at Bosco Institute in Indiana before signing with FAU.Â
