Badgers survive and advance to second round of NCAA Tournament

Wisconsin wins a comeback victory over Clemson

AUBURN, Ala. - The Wisconsin women's tennis team won a thrilling match in a come-from-behind victory over the Clemson Tigers 4-3 to advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Badgers dropped the doubles point to open the day after a couple of losses to the Tigers. The veteran duo of  No. 34 Maria Sholokhova and Ariel Johnson dropped their match in an uncharacteristic loss for them after they had won their last 5 results as doubles partners. Parker Christensen and Kaja Jacobson lost their match as well, clinching the point for Clemson. Ekaterina Ivanova and Taylor Cataldi were a bright spot for Wisconsin picking up a victory, 6-4 over Romana Cisovska and Candela Yecora.

After falling behind in the doubles point, Taylor Cataldi added to her impressive day by getting the Badgers a point in her singles match. The senior leader gave the Badgers a little momentum with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over No. 122 Sophia Hatton. However, the Badgers fell behind again after the Tigers won a couple of points back, making the score 1-3 in favor of Clemson.

With their backs against the wall the Badgers clawed their way back into the match behind a huge victory from Freshman Tianna Rangan who defeated Artemis Aslanasvili 7-5, 6-4. From there Wisconsin leaned on their experience with the last two matches of the day coming down to Senior, Ariel Johnson and Junior, Maria Sholokhova. Ariel Johnson dug out a back-and-forth victory beating Candela Yecora 6-1, 2-6, 6-1. In the final match of the day with everything on the line, Wisconsin was fortunate to have their top ten singles player and first team Big Ten selection Maria Sholokhova playing. She ensured a victory for Wisconsin and a place in the second round of the tournament with a win over Amelie Smejkalova, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

UP NEXT:
Wisconsin will take on the winner of Auburn and South Carolina State in the second round of the tournament tomorrow at 1 PM CST.
