Decker earns call to Hockey Hall of Fame

Wisconsin native becomes first UW women’s hockey player to be inducted

MADISON, Wis. - Wisconsin women's hockey legend Brianna Decker added another historic honor to her collection as the forward will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, Nov. 8-10, in Toronto.

Decker will become the first Wisconsin women's hockey player to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame and only the second Wisconsin hockey player to be inducted, joining UW men's hockey legend Chris Chelios.

The game-changing forward was a force on the ice for the Badgers from 2009-13. In 2012, she became just the fourth Badger to win the Patty Kazmaier Award, the highest individual honor in women's collegiate hockey. After her historic career at Wisconsin, Decker played professionally in both the National Women's Hockey League and the Canadian Women's Hockey League. She was also a part of the Professional Women's Hockey Players Association while performing on the international stage for over a decade as a member of Team USA.

The 2023 UW Athletic Hall of Fame honoree began her career under the helm of legendary head coach Mark Johnson, leading the Badgers to the 2011 NCAA Championship in her sophomore season.

Decker's stellar junior campaign was the best in the nation, as she was the national leader in goals (37) and tied for the national lead in total points (82). She was recognized as the WCHA Player of the Year, a first-team AHCA All-American, and the 2012 Patty Kazmaier Award recipient.

After a strong senior season as team captain, Decker departed from Madison as the then No. 2 all-time scorer in the program's history with 115 goals (current No. 3 all-time behind Casey O'Brien and her former teammate Hilary Knight).

As a member of Team USA, Decker played in 147 games, tallying 81 goals and 89 assists, good for 170 total points from 2007 to her final appearance in the 2022 Winter Olympics.

The 2024 USA Hockey Hall of Fame inductee represented Team USA at three separate Winter Olympics. Decker was a gold medal recipient in 2018 and earned silver medal honors in both 2014 and 2022.

A member of six gold medal-winning U.S. teams at the IIHF Women's World Championships, Decker represented the team on nine different occasions.

Decker made a name for herself with a major impact on the offensive side of the puck at the professional level in both the NWHL and CWHL. She was a two-time NWHL Most Valuable Player in 2016 and 2017, in addition to being honored as the Bob Allen Women's Player of the Year in both 2015 and 2017.

A native of Dousman, Wisconsin, Decker has served as the Girls Prep Associate Head Coach at Shattuck-St. Mary's since 2022, the same school she played at before joining the Badgers. She has also served as an assistant coach for the U.S. Under-18 Women's National Team on four different occasions (2019, 2020, 2023, 2024). During her time, Americans won gold at the 2020 IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championships and silver in 2019 and 2023.
