Five things to know: Men’s tennis begins the fall season

Three Badgers will travel to Tulsa to compete in the ITA All-American Championships

MADISON, Wis. - Three Badgers will travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma this weekend to take part in the ITA men's All-American Championships. Sophomores Edouard Aubert and Patrik Meszaros will compete in the singles pre-qualifying bracket, starting Saturday, Sept. 20. Senior Michael Minasyan will play in the single qualifying bracket, his first match will be played on Monday, Sept. 22.

Here are five things to know about the upcoming fall season.

1 – SUMMER FUN – The Badgers were busy over the summer months, playing in tournaments around the world. Edouard Aubert started his summer as a practice partner for tennis legend Novak Djokovic at an ATP event in Geneva. Patrik Meszaros finished runners-up with his partner Zsomber Velcz in the ITF M15 Pro Event in Hungary back in June. Sachiv Kumar kept busy in the offseason, winning the ITA Summer Masters Series at Northwestern to qualify for the ITA Summer Nationals event.

2 – STAYING THE SAME – The Wisconsin men's tennis team looks to build off of last season's success, returning every player on the roster. Meszaros will play in his second collegiate season after earning Big Ten All-Freshman team honors last year. Senior Michael Minasyan enters the season at No. 61 in the ITA preseason rankings. The Badgers No.1 doubles duo, Tomas Zlatohlavek and Oliver Olsson, will also begin the season in the rankings, at No. 72.

3 – LEADING THE TEAM – Head coach Danny Westerman is entering his 11th season with the Badgers. He led the team to a 9-12 record in the spring, after starting the season 6-2 in non-conference matches. Westerman passed the 100-career win mark last season, and is currently fourth on the Wisconsin all-time coaching wins list.

4 – FALL SEASON OVERVIEW  – The Badgers will be busy this fall, with eight events on the calendar. While team play officially starts in the spring, the men's tennis team will have multiple opportunities to compete for individual titles over the next few months. Wisconsin will also be hosting the Big Ten Individual Championships (Oct. 30-Nov. 2) for the third straight year at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

5 – UP NEXT – After competing in the ITA Men's All-American Championships this weekend, the Badgers will travel to Milwaukee for the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. 11 teams will bring players from across the country to compete over a three day period from Sept. 26 to Sept. 28.
