No. 8 Badgers dominate Cougars

Team effort leads to second-straight sweep for UW

MADISON, Wis. - For the second consecutive night, the No. 8 Wisconsin volleyball program notched a sweep against a non-conference opponent, this time taking down Chicago State (25-8, 25-13, 25-11).

The Badgers (3-1) came out firing against the Cougars (0-4)  in set one, finishing with a hitting percentage of .556. Middle blocker Carter Booth completed the set with a perfect 4-for-4 showing, ending the night with six kills on six attempts.

UW kept their foot on the gas in set two, using a 9-0 run to secure a second set victory in the evening—using the strong serve of outside hitter Una Vajagic to maintain the momentum. The redshirt sophomore finished with a career-best five aces from behind the line—emerging as the Badgers' leader on the season in the category.

A pair of kills from middle blocker Tosia Serafinowska, in her collegiate debut, wrapped up set two for UW.

Wisconsin cruised to their third win of the season in the third set, earning key contributions from a handful of underclassmen, highlighted by the play of libero Aniya Warren, middle blocker Natalie Wardlow and outside hitter Madison Quest. Warren, who earned her first start at libero, tallied a match-best 17 digs.

Outside hitter Mimi Colyer led the Badgers once again on the offensive end, tallying a team-high 11 kills on 20 attempts.

UW swung at a .444 clip (45 - 9 - 81), their highest on the young season. Setter Addy Horner took over on the offensive end during the latter half of the match—providing a career-high in assists with 25.

Straight from the Court:
Head Coach Kelly Sheffield (on the team's performance tonight): "I like the way our team played from the beginning and continued to play throughout the entire match. Holding any team to 13 kills in a match is doing some things defensively and serving wise. I thought we put a lot of pressure behind the service line and loved how we were pursuing balls in the backcourt."

(On middle blocker Natalie Wardlow's contributions):  "I think one thing you all have to see that we've been seeing in practice is the kid can serve as well. The ball is flat and it's got some movement and she can put it in really good places."

Setter Addy Horner (on the mentality this evening): "I'm just really proud of how our team came out, playing two games in a row and just training super hard. I'm really proud of how we came out tonight and fought. I think our energy was just super frisky throughout the whole match. Every single player on the team contributed to this win. I'm super proud of us. Grateful for the fans it's always a blast to be in the Field House."

Notes:
  • Badgers held Chicago State to just 13 kills (13 – 15 – 77) while the Badgers racked up 45 kills on 81 attempts (45 – 9 – 81) to hit .444 – a team, season-best.
