Wisconsin starts the new year strong
La Jolla, Calif. — The No. 15 Wisconsin women's swim and dive team capped off the first meet of the year with strong showings in California and Florida on Saturday morning. The swim team cruised past UCLA 148-113, UC San Diego 172-90 and Tulane 211-50, as the divers collected seven top-10 finishes at the FIU Sprint Invite.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Blair Stoneburg and Maddie Wagonner led the pack in the distance events, touching the wall in first and second in the 1000 free. Stoneburg touched the wall in 9:41.96 as Waggoner finished in 9:44.74.
Sophomore Maggie Wanezek took first place finishes in both her events. The Badger collected a 1:56.74 time in the 200 IM and a 51.22 time in the 100 back.
Hazal Ozkan led Wisconsin in the breaststroke events, collecting a first place finish in the 200 Breast in 2:11.09 and a second place finish in the 100 breast in 1:00.68.
Wisconsin took first place finishes in both relay events. The Wisconsin A crew, led by Abby and Maggie Wanezek, touched the wall in 1:29.77 in the 200 free relay. Bookened by the Wanezek sisters, the Wisconsin A crew collected a 3:33.46 finish in the 400 medley.
At the FIU Sprint Invite, Wisconsin put up a strong showing in the diving well. Junior Ryane Neal kicked off the new year with a strong first-place showing on the 3-meter, collecting 267.30 points. All four Badgers placed within the top 10, with Vivian Kinnard notching a 244.25-point score for a fifth-place finish.
UP NEXT
The Badgers hit the road to Evanston, Illinois, to take on Northwestern in a dual meet on Jan. 17.
