Wisconsin standouts collect first awards of the season
MADISON, Wis. — Senior Ben Wiegand and freshman Enzo Solitario of the Wisconsin men's swim and dive team received Big Ten Weekly Awards following the spring season opener, as announced by the conference on Wednesday afternoon.
Wiegand highlighted the weekend with two individual event wins and helped two relays to first place in Wisconsin's win over UC San Diego. The senior collected first place finishes in the sprint freestyle events, finishing in 20.03 in the 50 free and 43.93 in the 100 free. His 19.82 split to lead off the 200 free relay helped the team to a first place finish. This marks the seniors' second Swimmer of the Week award.
Solitario collected Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors after earning two individual event victories against UCSD. The freshman touched first in the 200 fly, finishing in 1:44.72 and followed up with a 1:48.56 time in the 200 IM, just shy of his lifetime best. Solitario highlighted relay action, anchoring a 43.25 split to help the 400 medley relay finish second. This marks Solitario's first award of his collegiate career.
Looking ahead, the Badgers head to Evanston to take on Northwestern in a dual on Jan. 17.
