Badgers win 5-1 for eighth WCHA sweep this season
MANKATO, Minn. — The No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey team (27-3-2, 21-3-2) swept Minnesota State in its final road trip of the season, collecting a 5-1 win at Mayo Clinic Event Center in Mankato this Saturday.
The Badgers now enter the final series of the regular season atop the WCHA standings, this series marked the eighth conference sweep of the season for UW.
Like the first game of the series, the bulk of the game's scoring came in the first period, with the Badgers putting across three goals in the frame.
The first two goals of the game came from the top line of Lacey Eden, Cassie Hall and Kelly Gorbatenko. Eight minutes into the game, Gorbatenko passed to Hall who found Eden in the slot - burying career goal No. 99 for the first notch of the day.
Three minutes later on a power play, it was Gorbatenko and Eden who found Hall in a similar position. The junior scored her second goal of the series, making it 2-0 Badgers.
The Mavericks retaliated less than a minute later, but another Badger power play gave UW its multi-goal lead right back, courtesy of senior Claire Enright who made things 3-1.
Eventually, Wisconsin was rewarded with a scoring opportunity when Charlotte Pieckenhagen passed to Marianne Picard on a two-on-one break. Picard capitalized by scoring a goal in her second straight game to make it 4-1.
Wisconsin put across one more goal in the game, when Finley McCarthy finished off a pass from Picard with a minute left in the third, finalizing the game at 5-1.
UW outscored MSU 9-2 in the series and outshot them 38-24 in game two. Stewart made 23 saves in a one-goal-allowed effort.
