Grad student picks up second conference honor of the season
MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin men's basketball grad student Nick Boyd has been named Big Ten Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
The 6-foot-3 guard averaged 27.0 points and 4.5 assists per game while orchestrating UW's pair of top-10 wins last week. He also had a 9-1 assist-turnover ratio over the two games, which ranked third in the league.
Boyd dropped 25 points, 5 assists and 0 turnovers during Wisconsin's 92-90 overtime win at No. 8 Illinois. He was the only Badger since at least 2004-05 to have 25 points, 5 assists and 0 turnovers against a top-10 team on the road.
The New York native extended his 20-point game streak to six contests on Friday thanks to a game-high 29 points on 10-of-17 shooting. It's the longest streak for a Badgers since Alando Tucker in the 2006-07 season. His five threes carried the Badgers over No. 10 Michigan State, 92-71, while also posting 4 assists and 3 rebounds.Â
For the season, Boyd is averaging 20.6 points per game, ranking third in the Big Ten. He became only the second Big Ten player in the last 20 seasons to have consecutive 25-plus point games against top-10 opponents (joining Carsen Edwards of Purdue).
The honor marks Boyd's second Big Ten Player of the Week award of the season. He previously earned the distinction on Jan. 12 for pacing UW to another top-10 win, that time over No. 2 Michigan, and a home victory against UCLA.
Boyd and the No. 24 Badgers return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Ohio State. Tipoff at Schottenstein Center is set for 7:30 p.m., with the game airing live on FS1.
