Badgers finish non-conference slate with a win

No. 21 Wisconsin defeats Northern Illinois 7-0 at Nielsen
MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin men's tennis team ended its non-conference schedule on a high-note, sweeping Northern Illinois at Nielsen Tennis Stadium. The Badgers earned the doubles point and took singles wins on every court to secure the 7-0 sweep, their fifth of the season.
The Badgers jumped out to an early match lead after winning the doubles point Saturday afternoon. At No. 1 doubles, Oliver Olsson and Tomas Zlatohlavek won their fourth straight match, defeating NIU's pairing 6-2. Ferdinand Kloesters and Michael Minasyan followed close behind, scoring a 6-2 victory of their own at No. 2 doubles. The sophomore/senior partnership improved to 7-0 this spring.
Singles play was highlighted by Zlatohlavek's outstanding performance in the No. 4 slot. The junior cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory against NIU's Scotuzzi, giving Wisconsin the 2-0 lead. Sachiv Kumar earned a straight set victory at No. 5 singles over NIU's Nan, extending his win streak to six matches.
Fullerton clinched the team win with a stellar performance at No. 6 singles, earning a straight set victory. Meszaros earned his seventh win of the spring, defeating NIU's Puntaric at No. 2 singles. Both Kloesters and Minasyan earned comeback victories at No. 3 and No.1 singles, respectively, securing the team sweep.
No. 21 Wisconsin ends its non-conference slate with a 9-1 record, going undefeated (7-0) at home.
Up Next: The Badgers have a week off before they hit the road for their first conference match of the season against the Michigan Wolverines on Friday, March 6. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT in Ann Arbor.
