Winter posts career-high 26 points
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Despite a career-high 26 points from Nolan Winter, the Wisconsin men's basketball team fell in overtime, 78-77, to Indiana on Saturday at Assembly Hall in Bloomington.
The junior notched his 11th double-double of the season with 26 points, 12 rebounds, while going 9-of-13 from the field. Nick Boyd dropped 20 points with a season-high five three-pointers. It's the 14th time he's gone over 20 this season, good for second in the Big Ten.Â
Junior John Blackwell had 18 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists, while Braeden Carrington added 7 points off the bench.Â
IU got off to a hot start, shooting 51.6-percent from the field in the first half. UW trailed 36-30 into the break after crawling their way back from an early 14-point deficit. Winter had 14 points, while Boyd chipped in 11 on 3-of-4 shooting from downtown.Â
UW gained some momentum after the 12-minute media timeout, sinking 5-of-6 shots and holding IU without a field goal for 3 minutes. The Badgers got within five points right before the 8-minute stoppage, thanks to a mini 8-0 run capped off by a Carrington three.Â
Wisconsin continued to battle under four minutes, taking the lead with a 10-0 run with just 50 seconds to play. Winter's three capped off the run, putting him over 20-points on the day. The Badgers held IU without a field goal for over 5 minutes during the spurt, until IU drew free throws to send the game to overtime.Â
A gritty overtime period saw each team get to the charity stripe on multiple possessions. The Badgers gained an early three-point lead after two straight defensive stops, followed by an IU foul on the other end. The Hoosiers made their first field goal of the overtime period – and first since the 4:28 mark of the second half – with 15 seconds to play, before getting fouled on the ensuing offensive possession and converting from the line for the win. Â
Up Next: Wisconsin will take on No. 5 Illinois on Tuesday in Champaign. Tip is set for 7 p.m. on Peacock.Â
