Boyd, Blackwell and Chambliss earn conference honors
MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin men's basketball team earned a trio of Big Ten honors on Tuesday, headlined by second-team All-Big Ten recognition for graduate student Nick Boyd, while John Blackwell picked up third-team All-Big Ten honors.Â
In addition, assistant coach Sharif Chambliss was named the Howard Moore Assistant Coach of the Year, his first time earning the award.Â
In his first and only season with the Badgers, Boyd is fourth in the Big Ten with 20.1 points per game. He's scored double figures in every contest this year, being one-of-three players in the conference to do so.
An architect of three top-10 wins, Boyd has put the country on notice when competition rises. He dropped 22 points, 6 assists and 3 rebounds in a road upset over No. 2 Michigan in January, before posting 25 points, 5 assists, 2 boards and 2 steals at No. 8 Illinois in February. He followed that up with 29 points against No. 10 Michigan State, sinking five three-pointers in the win. Boyd ended his regular season with 23 points at No. 15 Purdue last Saturday, pouring in 10 of UW's last 12 points to lift Bucky to victory.Â
Blackwell picked up third-team All-Big Ten honors, marking the second season in-a-row he's earned conference recognition. The junior was an All-Big Ten honorable mention last year. He averaged 18.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists this year, and ranked 9th in the conference in scoring. His 2.7 made threes per game were fifth.Â
Blackwell had three 30-plus point scoring performances, including 30 against Marquette with six triples. The Michigan native dropped 26 in the win at No. 2 Michigan, while pouring in 25 at Purdue on the back of five three-pointers on Saturday. During the back-to-back top-10 wins over Illinois and Michigan State, Blackwell posted 24 points in both games to aid UW to the upsets.Â
In his fifth season at UW, Chambliss aided the Badgers to another 20-win season. It's the fifth-straight 20-win season for the program, including the 2021-22 Big Ten Championship campaign. This year, Chambliss and staff guided UW to three top-25 road victories for just the third time in program history.Â
The award honors former Wisconsin assistant coach Howard Moore, and is presented to a men's basketball assistant coach who demonstrates commitment to the development of student-athletes on and off the court.Â
Isaac Gard was named Wisconsin's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree. The students chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These students must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
