Freshman Gutierrez leads Badgers at JT Poston Invitational

Team lands in eighth at season opener
Waynesville, N.C. — The Wisconsin men's golf freshman Joseph Gutierrez came in 18th place to lead the Badgers at the JT Poston Invitational. The Badgers took eighth place overall, scoring 14-under throughout the tournament held at the Waynesville Inn Country Club.
Gutierrez scored five-under to claim 18th place in his debut at the collegiate level. The freshman saved his best performance for Tuesday's final round when he shot a 68 (-3), moving up 14 places in the leaderboard. He had five birdies and just two bogeys in the final round.
Jason Shwartz, Charles Erlandson and Cody Guetzke all tied in 25th place at three-under par. Shwartz ended the tournament with a 70 (-1) in the final round on Tuesday, Erlandson with an even-par 71 and Guetzke with a final round 72 (+1).
William Harned placed tied for 76th at five-over, finishing the tournament with a 73 (+2). Competing individually, sophomore Vijay Kumar placed tied for 92nd at 13-over par.
The Badgers began with a five-under round before recording their best round of the week in the second round with a six-under round. UW recorded a three-under 281 in the final round on Tuesday, ending up at 14-under par. South Carolina won the team competition with a late day 3 surge, just ahead of NC State.
Wisconsin will return to action on the 21st back in Wisconsin against Army for the 2026 Bush Cup.
