Playing Career
Lettered three times each in football, basketball and baseball; All-America tight end in 1961 and 1962; Academic All-American in 1962; led the Big Ten in receiving yards twice and topped the nation as a junior; set a Rose Bowl record catching 11 passes for 163 yards vs. No. 1-ranked USC in 1963; All-Big Ten first baseman at UW; received his UW scholarship to play basketball; first round NFL draft pick of the Washington Redskins in 1963; played eight seasons for the Redskins.
Awards
1963 Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient (academic and athletic excellence); 1997 inductee into the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame; given an NCAA Silver Anniversary Award for post-collegiate accomplishment in 1988; member of the inaugural class of inductees into the Athletic Department's Hall of Fame in 1991; inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 1994; gained induction into the Verizon Academic All-America Hall of Fame in 1995; named "Executive of the Year" by the Sales & Executives of Madison in 1997; member of both the Wisconsin State Athletic and Madison Sports Halls of Fame.
NCAA and Big Ten committee service
Former chair of the Big Ten and WCHA athletic directors; currently serving on the NCAA Football Issues Committee; formerly served on the Big Ten Compliance Committee, the Rose Bowl Management Committee, the NCAA Division I-A Ice Hockey Committee and the Agent/Student-athlete Special Committee.
Noteworthy UW-Madison item
Richter and his wife, Renee, have made a generous charitable gift to the Kohl Center project -- two of the trophy cases on the main concourse have been named in their honor.
