Sieve Chant

In particular, in hockey, a goaltender who lets a lot of goals through is sometimes compared to a sieve. (In college hockey students chant the word sieve at the opposite goalie).

Started at the University of Wisconsin and adopted in various places and in various forms around college hockey, the ‘Sieve’ chant comes after every Badger goal. With the UW band’s drummers pounding rhythmically away and an outburst by 15,000+ fans on sell out nights, it is a sight and sound to behold.

The companion ‘Sieve’ banner is also flashed by the student section. It almost seems that for returning goaltenders, they dread giving up goals, especially that first one because they know they have to endure the ‘Sieve’ chant.
