Milligan Q&A
Why did you choose to become a coach?

I became a coach because I loved my time as a student-athlete [at Princeton], and want to help other young women have the same incredible experiences that I had. I truly believe that sports have helped shape who I am as a person, so this is my way of giving back to the game!

What is your favorite part about coaching?
My favorite part about coaching is getting to know the athletes I work with and what they are interested in outside of rowing. I always look forward to chatting with the team before and after practice about whatever is on their minds.

What is special about coaching at Wisconsin?
The community at Porter Boathouse! With the openweight and lightweight women, and the heavyweight men, the boathouse never sleeps! As a young coach, it has been incredible to observe the coaching styles of so many others who have decades of experience.

Speak on one of your favorite memories from coaching at Wisconsin.
My favorite memory from coaching at Wisconsin was at Big Tens last spring. I was just one year removed from my own rowing career ending in the early days of the pandemic, so it was emotional for me to be back at a championship regatta. That day, I was proud to be a part of a squad that worked so hard all season and came through when it mattered most to earn a bid to NCAAs.

What do you do outside of coaching?
Outside of coaching, I am currently working towards my master’s degree in educational leadership and policy analysis. I got into cycling during the pandemic and ride through the University Arboretum every day (weather permitting). I’m also a big sports fan, so you might catch me out supporting the volleyball or women’s ice hockey teams.

What do you look for in recruits?
Coachability and a willingness to push their limits.

If you were to describe the 2021-22 team personality in one word, what would it be and why?
I would describe this year’s team as passionate. They are a curious group that works consistently towards their goals.
