Gary White completed his 12th year with the Badgers. From 2022-2024, White served as an associate head coach, but as of 2025 White was named director of player personnel and analytics.
White has aided four Badger middle blockers to All-America honors, including five-time first-team selection and 2021 National Player of the Year Dana Rettke. Haleigh Nelson and Tionna Williams both earned three All-America honors while Dominique Thompson earned honorable mention honors in 2014.
On the Big Ten level, Rettke was named the Big Ten Player of the Year in 2019 and is a five-time first team pick. Nelson and Williams both earned two first-team honors while current Badger Danielle Hart earned second-team honors in 2019 and 2020. Thompson was an honorable mention pick in 2014.
“Gary has proven to be invaluable,” said head coach Kelly Sheffield. “First of all, nobody outworks him. He is constantly thinking of ways to make the program better and is a real student of the game. Secondly, he is really good in the gym. He is a great trainer and players love playing for, and working with him.”
White served as a volunteer assistant coach at Dayton for two seasons where his duties included on-court training, opponent video breakdown, and overseeing the program’s statistical and video analysis systems. White also aided Samantha Selsky to two All-America honors. Selsky was also named the Atlantic 10 Conference Setter of the Year in 2011 and 2012.
“I’m ecstatic to continue working at the University of Wisconsin,” said White. “This city is exciting and has a strong sense of community, and has a university that supports everything it means to become the best you can be. I’ve been able to follow the University of Wisconsin since I was in college and to be able to become part of the great traditions here is amazing."
"Wisconsin offers the best of what a college experience is all about—a world-class education, an excellent athletic department, being a part of a capital city, and on top of all that, being surrounded by a community that supports us in our push for greatness.”
In White’s two seasons at Dayton, the Flyers won two A10 titles and advanced to the NCAA tournament both seasons. During his time, UD compiled a 52-12 overall record and a 28-1 conference mark.
White also served as a head coach and setting coordinator with the Kingdom Volleyball Club in Springfield, Ohio, for one season and with the Virginia Elite Volleyball Club in Great Falls. Virginia, for three years. While coaching with those clubs, White trained more than 20 future college athletes while overseeing all aspects of training including team and individual development.
He also worked summer camps at Dayton, Illinois, and the Summer Slam Team Camp in Versailles, Ohio.
“Kelly has been a mentor for me for several years and he is one of the great minds in our sport,” said White of Sheffield. “When you speak with him, you feel his passion and his desire to not only train individuals and teams to be great at our sport, but to also seek out excellence in their lives. Kelly has the desire, drive, and skills to lead teams to titles and championships and I look forward to being a part of that process.”
White earned his bachelor’s degree in information sciences and technology from Penn State in 2007 while playing on the club volleyball team. He has a master’s degree in systems engineering from George Washington in 2010. Prior to joining Dayton, the Perkasie, Pennsylvania, native spent five years as a systems engineer for Lockheed Martin and The SI Organization in the Washington, D.C., area.
“My background includes an unconventional path of engineering and information sciences, but it’s that background that has provided me with the ability to focus on the analytical side of our sport,” said White. “I look forward to each and every day I spend with our team.”
White and his wife, Amy Rindahl, live in Oregon, Wisconsin.
