Kabotoff Earns Second Straight WCHA Honor
November 19, 2001 | Men's Hockey
Scott Kabotoff, the Badgers' junior goaltender from Sherwood Park, Alberta, has been honored for the second straight week as the WCHA's Defensive Player of the Week. In a weekend split against Michigan Tech, Kabotoff stopped 65 of 66 shots (.985) and recorded his first career shutout. The last Badger to earn a league Player of the Week honor in back-to-back weeks was goaltender Kirk Daubenspeck (Madison, Wis.) on Feb. 19 and 26, 1996 (both Defensive POW honors).
Over his past four consecutive WCHA starts, he has stopped 147 of 150 shots on goal for an unbelievable .980 save percentage. In that same span, Kabotoff has held opponents scoreless in nine of 12 periods and allowed just two even-strength goals. The Badger penalty killers, anchored by `Kabby', have allowed just two power-play goals in the last 40 attempts or just a 5 percent opponent success rate.
The 6-0, 175-pounder, is leading his WCHA peers in league play with a 1.00 goals-against average and a .973 save percentage.
Kabotoff gave up just one goal last weekend, in a 1-0 UW loss on Friday, where he stopped 32 of 33 Husky shots. In Saturday night's game, he stopped all 33 shots in recording his first career shutout in a 5-0 Badger win.
Wisconsin heads to Michigan this weekend to face off against Michigan State (Friday night at 6:05) and Michigan (Saturday night at 7:00) in the ninth annual College Hockey Showcase.
