The University of Wisconsin men's cross country team placed fifth overall with 245 points and two top-10 finishes at the NCAA Men's Cross Country Championship 10,000-meter race Monday.
Running together, Matt Tegenkamp finished seventh overall in 29:26 to lead the Badgers, while UW teammate Josh Spiker took eighth overall in 29:29. Both Tegenkamp and Spiker earned all-American honors for their races and beat Big Ten champion Alan Webb from Michigan who finished 11th in 29:38.
'They ran phenomenal for being freshmen in their first NCAA meet,' praised Coach Jerry Schumacher.
Coach Schumacher commented on Wisconsin taking fifth, 'I think we had a sixth to ninth place team depending on how other teams ran. All the teams here had just average days, we just had the best of the average days and were able to move up a place.'
Colorado edged out Stanford for the NCAA Championship by one point. Colorado (90), Stanford (91), Arkansas (118), and Northern Arizona (193) rounded out the top four teams. Colorado's Jorge Torres and Dathan Ritzenheim placed second and fourth, respectively, with times of 29:06 and 29:11 to help secure Colorado's win. Boaz Chboiywo of Eastern Michigan placed first individually with a time of 28:47.
Wisconsin senior Nick Winkel placed 57th overall in 30:37, followed by junior Isaiah Festa who finished 69th in 30:59 for the Badgers.
Helping the Badgers to their fifth place finish, sophomore Drew Hohensee took 97th place in 31:12 and freshman Colin Steele finished in 31:27 for 118th place overall.
