Wisconsin Opens Exhibition Schedule With Easy Win
November 04, 2001 | Women's Basketball
The University of Wisconsin began its pre-season exhibition schedule by downing the Wisconsin AAU-Select team 98-86. Using a balanced scoring attack that saw eight different Badgers score at least seven points, UW ran out to a 15-point halftime lead.
Wisconsin cruised to the victory in the second half, as Head Coach Jane Albright substituted liberally, giving 12 different players significant playing time.
The two teams started the game evenly, and the AUU squad, stocked with several former UW players, including Kelley Paulus, Amy Wiersma, and Karie Cattanach, trailed by only two points, 19-17, at the 13-minute mark of the opening frame. The Badgers responded to the challenge, however, and stepped up their defensive pressure. Over the ensuing eight minutes, Wisconsin forced five AAU turnovers and held the visitors to only four baskets on 13 shots. On the offensive end, the versatile UW offense outscored AAU 27-9 to push their lead to 20 points, 46-26, with five minutes left in the half.
The AAU team never got closer than 12 points the rest of the game, as Coach Albright experimented with different looks and gave her freshman players some court time. Senior tri-captain, Jessie Stomski led the Badgers with a double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds. Her fellow captain, Tamara Moore, also turned in a double-double with 14 points and 11 assists against only four turnovers. Newcomers Stephanie Rich and Ebba Gebisa contributed nine points and eight points, respectively, in their first collegiate action.
For AAU, former University of Nebraska standout, Anna DeForge scored a game-high 28 points. Sarah Schuetz chipped in with 17 points, and Middleton native Angie Halbieb finished the game with 14 points.
The Badgers play their final exhibition game this coming Tuesday, November 6 against Athletes in Action at 7:00 PM in the UW Field House.
