Women's Swimmers Nix Northwestern

The Wisconsin women's swimming and diving team improved to 2-0 in the Big Ten Conference and 3-2 overall with a 181-118 win over Northwestern Thursday night at the UW Natatorium.
'It was our best team performance to date,' coach Eric Hansen said.
The Badgers broke five UW Natatorium pool records on the night, including marks in both the 400-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Sarah McCauley (Tualatin, Ore.), Emily Pisula (Freeport, Ill.), Andrea Wanezek (Brookfield, Wis.) and Jenny Lyman (Englewood, Colo.) teamed in the 400 medley relay to touch in 3:47.64 to break the record by nearly five seconds.
In the 200 free relay, Lyman, Bethany Pendleton (Hood River, Ore.), Christy Mullinax (Texarkana, Ark.) and Betsy Hassebroek (Council Bluffs, Iowa) touched in 1:34.59 to end the night with another record. Lyman also grabbed wins in the 50- (23.77) and 100-yard (51.75) freestyle.
McCauley edged out Susie Sample of Northwestern in the 200-yard backstroke to set the Badgers' other pool record at 2:01.77. McCauley led a Wisconsin sweep of the top three spots in the 200-yard freestyle, touching in 1:49.59 to claim the top spot. Pendleton (1:51.00) and Carly Piper (Grosse Point, Mich.) (1:53.45) took second and third, respectively. Piper also added to the Badger attack in the 500-yard freestyle, winning the event in 4:56.12.
The Wisconsin divers had their best meet of the season setting pool records on both the 1- and 3-meter boards. Megan and Siobhan Kernan shared the top spot on the 1-meter board with a 293.03 total, while Siobhan also took honors on the 3-meter board with 297.98.
'Our divers came out and gave us a solid performance to add to the overall team effort,' diving coach Lee-Jay Strifler said.
Wisconsin next swims at the Minnesota Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn., Nov. 16-18.
