Davis Named a Doak Walker Semifinalist
November 09, 2001 | Football
Anthony Davis, a redshirt freshman running back with the Wisconsin football team, has been selected as one of eight semifinalists for the 2001 Doak Walker Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top running back.
Davis currently leads the Big Ten and is fourth nationally with 1,155 rushing yards. That total is the fourth-most ever by a Big Ten freshman. He has rushed for 100 yards eight times this season and needs one more 100-yard rushing performance to tie the NCAA record of nine (currently held by Pittsburgh's Tony Dorsett and New Mexico State's Ron 'Po' James).
Davis is joined on the semifinalist list by UCLA's DeShaun Foster, Iowa State's Ennis Haywood, East Carolina's Leonard Henry, San Diego State's Larry Ned, Maryland's Bruce Perry, BYU's Lucas Staley and Tennessee's Travis Stephens.
Three finalists for the award will be named on Nov. 27. The winner will be announced live on Dec. 6 at ESPN's Home Depot College Football Awards Show.
