Wisconsin's Anthony Davis, the freshman running back who led the Big Ten in rushing and finished as the nation's fourth-leading ball-carrier, has been named college football's National Freshman of the Year for 2001 by the Touchdown Club of Columbus, Ohio.
Davis, who averaged 133.3 yards per game and ran for 11 touchdowns this season, rushed for 1,466 yards, the third-highest figure by a freshman in Big Ten history and the sixth-highest total by a freshman in NCAA history. He also set the NCAA record for 100-yard rushing games by a freshman with 10 (Pittsburgh's Tony Dorsett and New Mexico State's Ron James previously held the record at nine).
Davis was a consensus first-team all-Big Ten selection, the Big Ten 's Freshman of the Year and was named first-team Freshman All-American by The Sporting News.
