Badger sophomore defensive backs Jim Leonhard and Scott Starks have been named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District 5 First Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced.
Both players now advance to the national ballot to vie for spots on the 2002 Verizon Academic All-America team. To qualify for the Verizon Academic All-District ballot, student-athletes must have a minimum 3.20 grade-point average.
Leonhard, Wisconsin's starting strong safety, is a kinesiology major. He has started all 11 games this season and is tied for the national lead in interceptions with eight (one short of tying the UW single-season record). He also leads the Big Ten with 21 pass breakups and is Wisconsin's leading tackler (82). Leonhard is a walk-on from Tony, Wis.
Starks, a starter all season at a cornerback spot, has not yet declared a major. Starks has seven pass breakups this season, along with two fumbles caused and two fumbles recovered. The St. Louis, Mo., native has started 21 straight games for the Badgers.
Leonhard, Starks and the rest of the Badgers travel to Ann Arbor on Saturday to square off against Michigan. Kickoff is set for 11:05 a.m. CST. The game will be televised live on ESPN2.
