Cross Country Men Win NCAA Regional; Women Place Sixth

The fourth-ranked Badger men backed up their Big Ten title with a regional victory at the NCAA Division I Great Lakes Region Championships in West Lafayette, Ind. The Badger women's team placed sixth at the event.
The men's win was 18th title for the Badgers and breaks the previous Wisconsin-held mark of 17. The victory in the 29-team field also earned Wisconsin an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships at Terre Haute, Ind. Eastern Michigan earned the other automatic bid, finishing in second place.
Defending Big Ten Individual Champion Matt Tegenkamp was the first Badger to cross the finish line placing seventh in a time of 30:46.7. Close behind where teammates Bobby Lockhart finishing ninth (30:49.2), Simon Bairu in tenth (30:49.2), and Adam Wallace taking 11th (30:49.9). Also finsihing for Wisconsin, Tim Keller took 20th (31:14.5), Drew Hohensee placed 36th (31:35.5), and Colin Steele was 47th (31:49.3).
The Wisconsin women finished sixth in a field of 31 with junior Hilary Edmondson's 16th place finish in 21:52.8 leading the Badger scoring. Heidi Lane finished 19th (22:00.5), Liz Reusser placed 20th (22:01.3), Michelle Lilienthal and Elaine Canchola took 42nd (22:26.7) and 51st (22:34.3) respectively. Also finishing for the Badgers were Linsey Blaisdell in 58th (22:46.6) and Jackie Mulrooney in 76th (23:06.3).
The next event for both the men and women is the 2002 NCAA Championships on Nov. 25 in Terre Haute, Ind.
