Women's Swimmers Close Competition at Nationals

Several Wisconsin women's swimmers recently completed competition at the 2002 Phillips 66 Summer Nationals in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Aug. 12-17. Sophomore Carly Piper tallied 33 points, ranking 24th out of 125 athletes.
A third-place finish (16:46.74) in the 1500 long course (LC) meter freestyle was Piper's top performance. Piper also took 10th in the 800 LC meter free (8:44.07), 11th in the 200 LC meter free (2:02.14) and 13th in the 400 LC meter free (4:17.77). Her times in the 200, 400 and 800 are all Olympic Trials qualifying times. Piper is being considered for the 2003 World University Games or the 2003 Pan American Games, according to assistant head coach Geoff Hanson.
Other Badgers competing in nationals were Betsy Hassebroek, Jenny Lyman, Sarah McCauley, Bethany Pendleton and Emily Pisula. Pisula took 13th in the 200 LC meter IM B final (2:20.51). In the C finals of the 100 LC meter free, McCauley touched in at 57.14, good for 22nd.
Wisconsin starts its 2002-03 season Oct. 11-12, with the Wisconsin Invite at the UW Natatorium.
