Head softball coach Karen Gallagher recently added Tammy Lohmann and Brandee McArthur to her staff as the program's two assistant coaches. Lohmann and McArthur replace DeeDee Weiman and Ali Viola, who departed to pursue other career interests.
'I think Tammy is going to add a wealth of experience and she's going to be a great recruiter for us,' Gallagher said. 'I think her strengths are going to be working with our hitters and helping our program improve and get to the next level'
'I think [Brandee] is going to add a lot,' Gallagher said. 'She's high energy. Our pitching staff will really benefit from her strengths. When you play at a high level you understand what it takes to teach and prepare your athletes to play at a high level also.'
Lohmann comes to Wisconsin from Bradley University, where she was an assistant softball coach since October 1999. A two-time all-conference selection at Arizona State, Lohmann was named ASU Softball Freshman of the Year, a member of the Student Athlete Committee in 1995 and team captain in 1997. Lohmann is a 1997 graduate of ASU with a bachelor's degree in Family Resources and Human Development. She is currently completing a MA in Human Service Administration from Bradley.
After her collegiate career, Lohmann played in the Ladies Professional Baseball League as a member of the Arizona Peppers in the summer of 1998. Lohmann was also a member of the USA Women's Baseball National Tournament in 1998 as a member of the Arizona Angels.
'I'm definitely happy to be here and be a part of a continuing successful program,' Lohmann said. 'I think with my background 'I can bring that vast knowledge in regards to not only coaching, but my experience.'
McArthur steps in as the Badgers' pitching coach after an assistant coaching stint at Kentucky. An All-American and three-time all-conference selection at University of the Pacific, McArthur was the 1999 Big West Pitcher of the Year, and a two-time regional all-tournament team selection. McArthur earned a BA in Sports Sciences from the University of Pacific in 1999, graduating as the career leader in wins, strikeouts and shutouts.
A member of the Women's Professional Softball League, McArthur led the league in strikeouts in 2000 as a member of the Ohio Pride, runners-up in 2000, and was named to the 1999 All-Star team. McArthur also taught at the United Softball Acadamy and Ernie Parker Pitching Clinics. In 2001, McArthur played with the Crocetta Italian softball team.
'I am very excited to be a part of this program,' McArthur said. 'I hope to bring new and fresh ideas to the pitchers as well as my knowledge and experience of the game.'
McArthur and Lohmann, who played together on the WPSL Carolina Diamonds in 1999, will make their UW coaching debut next weekend with the Badgers at the National Invitational Championship in Moline, Ill., Sept. 20-22.
