Head Men's Golf Coach Jim Schuman announced the signing of two recruits in his first recruiting class at Wisconsin. Jeff Kaiser of Onalaska, Wis., and Charlie Delsman of Hartland, Wis., signed national letters of intent during the early signing period to attend UW-Madison in the fall.
Kaiser, from Onalaska High School, earned 2003 Future Collegiate World Tour (FCWT) All-American honorable mention honors and was a WIAA first-team All-State team member. He tied first in the 2003 WIAA Div. I tournament (at one-under par) before losing in the playoff. The two-time Mississippi Valley Conference Player of the Year, he is ranked 259th in the GolfWeek/Titleist Junior Rankings, and is ranked No. 343 nationally in the Junior Golf Scoreboard.
'I believe that Jeff is currently the best junior golfer in the state of Wisconsin,' Schuman said of his first signee,' Jeff brings with him success in both national and international competition. His experience along with his natural ability to manage his game under any circumstance, are just a couple of traits that will help him be successful at the college level.'
Kaiser has participated in a number of national tournaments and won the FCWT Regional at Michigan State thereby qualifying for the FCWT National Championship. He had top-10 finishes in six American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) events in 2002 and 2003, and was third in the 2002 PARS International Junior Championship. In the summer of 2002, he tied for16th in the WSGA Men's State Amateur Championships, and tied for 10th in the 2002 PGA Westfield Junior Championship. He owns several course records including a 65 at Cedar Creek Country Club, and a 64 at Whispering Springs Golf Course in Cadott, Wis.
Charlie Delsman is a three-time first team WIAA All-State team member and was the 2001 WIAA Player of the Year. The 2003 Hartland Arrowhead graduate had four-straight top-seven state high school finishes and tied for first in the WIAA Div. I Tournament in 2001. He placed fifth at the 2003 state tournament. The Classic 8 Conference Player of the Year in 2001, he earned first team all-conference honors four years (2000-2003).
Among other state career highlights, Delsman won the 2003 Ray Fischer Tournament and set the tournament record with a 21-under par 68-65-67-67'267. He was first at the 2003 WSGA State Junior Amateur with a tournament record nine-under par 70-69-62'201. His final round 62 was also a course record at the Rock River Hills Golf Course. He placed second at the 2003 Golf Foundation of Wisconsin lake Arrowhead Invitational with a four-under 68-72'140, and tied for ninth at the 2003 WSGA State Amateur.
On the national scene, Delsman won the 2002 USGA Junior Amateur Qualifier shooting a 66-67'133. His seven under par score was the lowest qualifying score in the nation that year. He tied for 64th of 156 players in the 2002 USGA Junior Amateur, losing in a playoff to advance to match play. He participated in the 2001 Junior World Championships tying for 22nd, and won first place in the 2001 International Junior Golf Tournament Stata Desert Tournament.
Schuman calls Delsman a `natural' golfer saying, 'Charlie has a natural talent for golf like very few people have. His 36-hole total of 133 (66, 67) at the 2002 USGA Junior was the lowest qualifying score in the nation. Along with his closing round 62 to win the 2003 state junior, both are indications that Charlie's future in golf is very bright.' Schuman continued, 'In 2002 Charlie established himself as the best junior player in the state and one of the best in the country. Having Charlie at Wisconsin is going to bring something very special to our program.'
