Senior wide receiver Lee Evans was honored as the Jimmy Demetral Most Valuable Player Award winner Friday night at the Wisconsin football team's annual Senior Banquet at the Marriott West Hotel.
Evans, who also won the honor in 2001, is the first two-time winner since wide receiver Al Toon (1983 and 1984). Evans leads the Big Ten in receiving yardage and is No. 2 on the conference's career receiving yards list.
Senior quarterback Jim Sorgi and junior defensive lineman Anttaj Hawthorne earned the Wayne Souza Coaches Appreciation Award (offense) and the Jay Seiler Coaches Appreciation Award (defense), respectively, based on their improvement, attitude and willingness to help the program.
The team's Ivan B. Williamson Scholastic Award, which goes to a player who has been exemplary in the area of scholarship and sportsmanship, went to senior linebacker Jeff Mack.
Wisconsin's Special Teams Award was won for the second straight season by junior defensive back Jim Leonhard, who broke his own season record for punt return yardage with 435 and ran two punts back for touchdowns.
UW's Rookie of the Year honor went to running back Booker Stanley, while the offensive and defensive Scout Team Awards were awarded to quarterback Tyler Donovan and defensive lineman Jamal Cooper, respectively.
The Captains' Cup went to Director of Athletics Pat Richter. The award is presented annually to an individual, other than a player or coach, who has shown tremendous dedication and unselfish commitment toward the betterment of the football program. The recipient is selected by the head coach and team captains.
