Wisconsin Stays Atop Polls

The University of Wisconsin men's cross country team stays atop the Mondo Men 's Cross Country poll for the third week in a row, as the Badgers received all 14 first-place votes for the second consecutive week. Stanford, the reigning national champion, is still No. 2. The poll is conducted by the United States Cross Country Coaches Association and was released Oct. 5.
The Arkansas Razorbacks made a move to third place, followed by Iona, and fellow Big Ten rival Michigan. The Big Ten has a total of six teams ranked in the top 30. Minnesota is ranked 17th, followed by No. 19 Indiana, No. 24 Ohio State, and No. 30 Iowa.
On Sept. 25, UW dominated the 30-team Roy Griak Invitational, placing six runners in the top 10, for a total of 21 team points. Wisconsin senior Matt Tegenkamp took home the individual title for the second time in his career, finishing the 8-kilometer race in 24:02. The win also earned Tegenkamp his second Big Ten Runner of the Week honors.
The Badgers head to La Crosse, Wis., Oct. 16 for the Jim Drews Invitational. Racing begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Maple Grove Country Club. In 2003 UW finished first out of 17 teams, with a team score of 19 points. Senior Josh Spiker won the event while Tim Nelson came in third followed by Simon Bairu in fourth.
