Men's Cross Country Win NCAA Regional; Women Eighth Place

The No. 1 Wisconsin men's cross country team won their 20th NCAA Great Lakes regional title today in Ypsilanti, Michigan. UW, which recently won its sixth consecutive Big Ten Championship, has now automatically qualified for their 33rd NCAA championship.
The Badgers had six runners in the top 25 to earn all-region honors. Senior Matt Tegenkamp led the way for UW placing sixth overall (30:24.7). Chris Solinsky followed in seventh (30:25.1), with Simon Bairu finishing 10th (30:25.7). Senior Josh Spiker was close behind finishing 11th (30:26.0), followed by 2003 regional champion Bobby Lockhart in 13th (30:29.2). Tim Nelson and Tim Keller also ran for the Badgers finishing 18th (30:33.1)and 29th (31:01.9), respectively.
No. 5 Notre Dame came in second with 82 points, followed by No. 13 Butler University with 102.
The University of Wisconsin women's team finished eighth with 213 points, while Michigan took a first-place finish with 40 points. Sophomore Katrina Rundhaug was the only runner to place in the top-15, taking 11th overall at 20:35.2. Junior A' Havahla Haynes placed 32nd (21:90.5) while teammate Heidi Lane took 39th (21:16.6).
Also running for the Badger women were sophomore Amanda Ganser (21:29.8), freshman Emily Post (21:59.6) and sophomore Megan Thomas (22:30.1).
The Wisconsin men's team will compete at the 2004 NCAA Championships on Monday Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Ind. The women's team will await to see if they are selected as an at large team.
