UW Women Finish Strong After Day One of Minnesota Invite

Senior Carly Piper won the 500-yard freestyle and sophomore Anna Trinidad finished first in the 200-yard individual medley to help lead the Wisconsin women's swimming and diving team to a strong finish after Day One of the Minnesota Invitational Friday.
Piper began the competition with her top finish in the 500 free (4:49.80) in the preliminary round. Junior Emily Carpenter took fourth with a time of 4:56.56, while teammate Rebecca Johansson finished fifth at 5:02.67.
Trinidad finished strong in the 200 IM, heading the field with a time of 2:01.54. Sophomore Andrea Wiesner and junior Amalia Sarnecki took second and third, posting times of 2:04.88 and 2:05.51, respectively. Sophomore Sierra Lewis came in seventh at 2:09.66.
The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Sarah Hernandez, Susan Johnson, Jackie Vavrek, and Trinidad took a first-place finish, posting a time of 1:34.34. The Badgers' "B" squad of Sarnecki, Jenny Gelden, Jenny Will, and Wiesner finished third h in 1:36.57.
Hernandez added to UW's first-place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (23.48). Johnson took third with a time of 23.87.
Amanda Witte leads the Badgers on the boards, finishing tenth on the 1-meter board (234.95). Junior Cassie Kubly finished 12th with a score of 227.45.
Action continues through Saturday and Sunday at the University of Minnesota. Prelims are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., while the finals are again at 6 p.m.
