Special Guests, Visit Mark Badgers' Tuesday
December 28, 2004 | Football
The sun came out Monday afternoon and the Wisconsin football team enjoyed another spirited practice as it counts down the days toward its Outback Bowl matchup this Saturday.
After battling cool temperatures during their first practice in Tampa Sunday, the Badgers worked out under beautiful conditions at the University of Tampa Monday as the temperature climbed near 70 degrees.
UW had a special guest attend practice Monday as recently retired South Carolina head coach Lou Holtz made an appearance. Holtz, who was the head coach at Notre Dame in the late 1980s when Barry Alvarez was his defensive coordinator, addressed the team prior to the start of practice and then watch the Badgers work out for the majority of the practice.
Also in attendance at Monday's practice were former Green Bay Packer wide receiver Boyd Dowler and major league baseball player Fred McGriff, who got in a jog on the track surrounding the Badgers' practice field.
Following practice, six UW players joined players from the University of Georgia in making a visit to St. Joseph's Children's Hospital in Tampa. Anthony Davis, Mark Zalewski, Andy Crooks, Robert Brooks, Jonathan Welsh and Owen Daniels joined Bulldogs Marcus Jackson, Jamario Smith, Ben Reaves, Tra Holden, Kregg Lumpkin, Brett Thomason, Josh Brock, Bartley Miller and Charles Krauth on the visit.
The players distributed stuffed animals, posters, pennants and other items and signed autographs for about 90 children throughout the hospital and emergency room.
Practice for the Badgers continues Tuesday, a day which also includes a trip to Busch Gardens. Wisconsin and Georgia square off in the Outback Bowl this Saturday at 11 a.m. Central time.
