UW Golfer finished 31st at U.S. Open

Former Badger golfer David Roesch, who tied for fourth after the first round of the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills in Long Island in New York, finished in a tie for 31st in his first open appearance. Roesch followed his two-under-par 68 Thursday with a three-over 73 on Friday to tie for 18th. The tough course conditions over the weekend ballooned most scores with Roesch hitting a 68-73-74-80'295. Retief Goosen won the tournament with a four-under par 276. Phil Mickelson was the only other golfer in the field under par finishing second at 278.
Roesch lettered in golf from 1994-97 at the University of Wisconsin and was the team MVP in 1997. Presently a member of the Hooters Tour, the Menomonee Falls, Wis., native played in the U.S. Amateur Pubic Links in 1996 and 1997. He won the Wisconsin State Match Play Championship in 1996 and 1997, and won the Wisconsin Ray Fischer Championship in 1997.
In professional events, he won the NGA/Hooters Tournament in Shelby, N.C., in 2002. This was the fifth time Roesch had tried to qualify for the Open and his first time making it through the qualifying round. For all the scores logon on to usopen.com.
