July 29, 2004 | Women's Swimming & Diving
University of Wisconsin swimmers Adam Mania (Hickman, Neb.) and Sarah Hernandez (Chico, Calif.) were named College Swimming Coaches Association of America Academic All-Americans, the organization announced recently.
The award is given to athletes who participate in the NCAA, NAIA or JC Swimming and Diving Championships, carry a GPA of 3.5 or better (cumulatively, in the current semester or in the current year) and are eligible academically under NCAA rules.
Both Mania, a senior-to-be who will swim for Poland at the 2004 Olympics, and Hernandez, a senior-to-be who qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, won the award for the first time.
They are joined by Emily Carpenter (Lee's Summit, Mo.), another senior-to-be who was an honorable mention selection based on achieving a 'B' time standard for the NCAA Championships, in addition to the academic requirements.
Meanwhile, the men's and women's teams earned the team academic award.
