Badger Men Take First At Roy Griak Invitational

The top-ranked Wisconsin men's cross country team claimed its 11th Roy Griak Invitational title in Minneapolis on Saturday, while the women's team finished 17th.
The men placed six runners in the top 10 for a total of 21 team points, while runner-up Butler finished with 102 points. Griak host Minnesota placed fourth with 180 points.
On the women's side, No. 2 Providence captured the team title with 58 points followed by No. 19 Arizona State with 81 points. Wisconsin finished 17th of 30 teams with a total of 466 points.
Wisconsin senior Matt Tegenkamp won the second individual Griak title of his career, finishing the 8-kilometer with a time of 24:02. Tegenkamp also won the title in 2001.
Badger junior Simon Bairu came in second (24:07), while teammate Chris Solinsky finished third (24:11).
Josh Spiker (24:39), Tim Nelson (24:34), and Tim Keller (24:35) rounded out the top-10 placing seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively. Big Ten Runner of the Week Bobby Lockhart came in 16th with a time of 24:50.
"This race is a good marker of where we are as a team," said Tegenkamp. "The Griak tested us in a big meet and we ran our own race."
The Badger women were led by sophomore Katrina Rundhaug who came in 22nd with a time of 21:53, followed by `A Havahla Haynes who placed 52nd (22:33). Also running for Wisconsin were Megan Thomas (23:19), Amanda Ganser (23:37), Emily Post (23:37), and Ann Detmer (24:00).
The Badgers are back in action on Oct. 16th with the men going to the Jim Drews Invitational in La Crosse, while the women head to Terre Haute, Ind. for the Pre-NCAA Invitational.
