Badgers Remain on the Top of the Polls

The University of Wisconsin men's cross country team is ranked No. 1 in the Mondo Men's Cross Country Poll, receiving all 14 first-place votes. The Badgers are ranked first for the second week in a row. The poll is conducted by the United States Cross Country Coaches Association and was released Sept. 28. In 2003, the Badgers finished second at the NCAA Championships and won their fifth consecutive Big Ten Championship.
Stanford, the reining national champion, is still ranked second, Iona third, followed by Arkansas and Colorado. The Big Ten has six teams ranked in the top 30. Michigan is ranked sixth, followed by No. 12 Indiana and No. 16 Minnesota. Ohio State has moved up and is currently No. 21. Iowa is now in a tie with Washington at No. 26
The Badgers head to La Crosse, Wis., Oct. 16 for the Jim Drews Invitational. Racing begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Maple Grove Country Club. In 2003 UW finished first out of 17 teams, with a team score of 19 points. Senior Josh Spiker won the event while Tim Nelson came in third followed by Simon Bairu in fourth.
