Badgers Steady at No. 2
October 18, 2005 | Men's Cross Country
The Wisconsin men's cross country team remains in the No. 2 spot of the NCAA MONDO Division I Men's Cross Country poll released Tuesday. The Badgers received four first place votes while No. 1 Arkansas received 12. Colorado controlled the No. 3 spot and received no first place votes.
This is the second time in the 2005 season the Badgers are No. 2. The Badgers controlled the No. 1 spot for the first three polls of the season and dropped to No. 2 on the Oct. 18 poll.
After the top three, many teams traded positions in the rest of the top 10. Stanford moved from No. 5 to No. 4 while Notre Dame moved up from No. 7 to No. 5. Brigham Young dropped from No. 4 to No. 6 as did Arizona from No. 6 to No. 7. Florida made the biggest jump in the top 10 from No. 13 to No. 8 while Georgia moved from No. 12 to No. 9. UTEP moved up from No. 11 to round out the top 10.
Five other Big Ten teams were also ranked. Iowa moved up to No. 11 from a No. 14 ranking last poll and Michigan also moved up from No. 19 to No. 17. Indiana dropped down a spot to No. 22 this week while Minnesota fell from No. 20 to No. 23 and Ohio State from No. 18 to No. 16.
The Badgers are coming off their third consecutive Jim Drews Title last Saturday in West Salem, Wis. The team scored 46 points in the 23-team meet and was led by redshirt freshman Christian Wagner's third place finish (24:25.4).
Next up for the Badgers is the Big Ten Championships, Sunday, Oct. 30, in Minneapolis, Minn. Wisconsin has won the last six Big Ten titles while senior Simon Bairu has won the individual title the past two years. The meet kicks off at 11:00 a.m. on the Les Bolstad Golf Course.
