October 04, 2005 | Men's Golf
The Wisconsin men's golf team climbed four spots to finish in third place Tuesday at the Memphis Intercollegiate thanks to a 2-under 286 in the final round at Colonial Country Club in Memphis, Tenn. UW concluded the tournament with a score of 883, two shots behind Southern Mississippi for second place.
Leading the charge for the Badgers was sophomore Jeff Kaiser (Onalaska, Wis.) whose final round 3-under 69 vaulted him into a tie for 14th place at 220 (77-74-69=220). Joining Kaiser at 220 was junior Garrett Jones, who closed out the tournament with a 73 (74-73-73=220).
Freshmen Tyler Obermueller (River Falls, Wis.) and Ben Herrera (Waukee, Iowa) each posted an even-par 72 in Tuesday's round. Obermueller finished tied for 16th place at 221 (76-73-72=221) while Obermueller finished one stroke back in a tie for 22nd place (75-75-72=222). Both rookies established new personal bests for 54 holes.
Junior Adam Steinhofer (Madison, Wis.) rebounded from a tough second round to shoot a 75 on Tuesday. Steinhofer finished tied for 81st place at 239 (77-87-75=239).
Memphis held on to claim its second-consecutive Memphis Intercollegiate at 876 and boasted individual medalist Keven Fortin-Simard, who finished the tournament at 8-under 208.
Wisconsin's 286 in the final round matched the lowest team score of the tournament. Iowa also posted a 286 on Tuesday as the Hawkeyes tied for fourth. The score was also UW's lowest in tourney action since the third round of last October's Xavier Invitational.
The Badgers will look to ride the momentum from Tuesday's round when they travel to Cincinnati Oct. 10-11 to take part in this year's Xavier Invitational. In last year's tournament, Wisconsin used rounds of 281 and 282 to tie for second place.
