UW Plays Host to Round Robin Tourney
October 06, 2005 | Softball
The University of Wisconsin softball team will play host to a three-team round robin, exhibition tournament beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday at Goodman Diamond. The two games Wisconsin will play--11 a.m. vs. UW-Parkside and 3 p.m. vs. UW-Green Bay--will be its only competition of the fall season.
In addition to the team making its season debut, new head coach Chandelle Schulte will be making her UW debut.
"I'm really excited about seeing the team take the field," Schulte said. "We've made a lot of progress so far this fall, and it'll be great to finally have some competition."
2B Kaitlin Reiss is the lone senior on a team that last year finished with a 31-24 record and trips to the Big Ten and NCAA tournaments. Reiss, a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, played in 25 games last season and recorded 57 putouts and 38 assists.
Sophomore IF Katie Hnatyk is the leading returning hitter; she batted .313 a season ago with 40 hits (sixth most), nine home runs (third most) and 27 RBIs (third most). Junior OF Samantha Polito and sophomore catcher Joey Daniels also will try to build upon their stellar freshmen season in which they combined for 109 starts (out of 110), 95 hits and 32 RBIs.
UW-Parkside, an NCAA Division II school, has had a busy fall schedule, to say the least. The Rangers have already competed in an intrasquad game, a contest vs. their alumnae, the Chicagoland Fall Classic, their own Fall Classic and games vs. Notre Dame and Western Michigan.
UW-Green Bay, a 2005 NCAA tournament participant after winning its conference title, has played five home games so far this year. The Phoenix also will have a home-and-home contest with Wisconsin in the spring.
The Badgers defeated the Rangers 2-1 and the Phoenix 5-0 and 4-3 in last year's round robin. UW-Parkside and UW-Green Bay will play each other at 1 p.m.
