Wisconsin men's golf head coach Jim Schuman recently announced that two student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent during the early signing period. Craig Cerbins (Portage, Wis.) and Austin Ehlenfeldt (Beaver Dam, Wis.) will join the Badgers for the 2006-07 season.
By signing two highly-regarded Wisconsin natives, coach Schuman is continuing the trend of keeping talented players in the state.
'I'm so excited for both of them to be part of the Badger family,' Schuman said. 'They are great additions to the program and are two examples of the pool of talent in this state.'
Craig Cerbins comes to UW from Portage High School. He was named the 2005 High School Player of the Year by the Wisconsin High School Golf Coaches Association after claiming the WIAA state championship in a one-hole playoff. Cerbins is ranked as the 71st-best player in the 2006 class, as well as the best junior golfer in Wisconsin, by the Golfweek/Titleist Performance Index. A three-time WIAA Sectional champion and all-state selection, he was also named the 2004 Wisconsin PGA Player of the Year. Cerbins has posted five Top 5 finishes in American Junior Golf Association events as well as four Top 10 finishes in Future Collegiate World Tour events. He has a USGA handicap of +2.4.
Schuman on Cerbins:
'We've been watching Craig for a long time and I 'm really impressed how mature he is out there on the course. His game is really strong in every area and he's going to have a big impact on our program. '
Austin Ehlenfeldt joins the Badgers from Beaver Dam High School. He was named the Wisconsin Little Ten Player of the Year in 2005 as well as honorable mention all-state. Ranked the 101st-best player in the 2006 class and the third-best junior golfer in the state by the Golfweek/Titleist Performance Index, Ehlenfeldt won the 2005 USGA Junior Amateur Qualifying event in Watertown, Wis. He went on to shoot rounds of 76 and 74 at the prestigious USGA Junior Amateur Championship in Longmeadow, Mass. Ehlenfeldt, who has posted four Top 20 finishes in American Junior Golf Association events, boasts a USGA handicap of +1.6.
Schuman on Ehlenfeldt:
'Austin has great skills and a great work ethic in the classroom and on the course. I think he is just finding out how good of a player he is and I'm really excited about watching him develop.'
