Kansas Knocks Off Wisconsin in Double Overtime, 90-87
December 11, 2005 | Women's Basketball
The Wisconsin women's basketball team (4-5) suffered another heartbreaker to Kansas in double-overtime loss Sunday, 90-87. Sophomore Jolene Anderson led the Badgers with her second double-double of the year, scoring 26 points and pulling down 14 boards. Senior Ashley Josephson also had a solid day, netting a season-best 20 points.
'The things we addressed in practice following the loss to South Dakota State were demonstrated today,' Lisa Stone, Wisconsin head coach, said. 'The kids played hard. Jolene was our go-to person today and she converted. Both teams battled.'
The Badgers once led by 18 points in the first half, but Kansas came crawling back closed the second half on a 7-6 run. Anderson (Port Wing, Wis.) and Josephson (Onalaska, Wis.) both missed the front end of 1-and-1 opportunities from the free throw line, and Kansas was able to convert following both missed opportunities by the Badgers. KU 's Erica Hallman hit a 3-pointer with 20 seconds to play in regulation to tie the game at 70 and send the game into overtime.
In the first overtime there were six lead changes. Wisconsin, down three late in the first overtime, was able to get a miraculous 3-point shot from Anderson, who banked a trey launched from her hip and near the UW sideline off the backboard as the buzzer sounded to send the game into its second overtime locked at 81.
In the second overtime, the teams traded baskets and the contest was tied at 87 with 1:32 to play. Kemp hit her second of two free throws to give the Jayhawks a one-point lead with 1:16 to play. The Badgers could not convert on the offensive side, and Crystal Kemp once again hit 1-of-2 shots from the charity stripe following a Wisconsin foul.
With Kansas up 89-87, Anderson missed a shot that was well-defended, and a jump ball call following the KU rebound gave the ball to the Jayhawks with 20 seconds to play. Hallman hit her second of two from the line to extend the lead to three with one last chance for the Badgers. Anderson missed a wide-open look but chased down the board and kicked it out to Josephson who put up another 3-point look but it bounced off the rim and the Jayhawks escaped with the win.
'There were a couple of turning points,' Stone said. 'If we make three throws at the end of regulation, it's our game, but I'm proud of the way the kids played. Ashley was hot to start and Jolene was all over the place. They worked their tails off but we just couldn't close the door.'
Anderson tied her personal-best with 14 boards in the game. Rookie Caitlin Gibson (Jefferson, Wis.) finished with 10 points and seven rebounds while Annie Nelson (Hudson, Wis.) put up seven scores and was second on the team with 11 caroms.
Kemp led Kansas, who is an undefeated 7-0 on the year, with a game-high 28 points. Hallman finished with 24.
The double-overtime contest was just the fifth in the history of the Badger program, and the first under Stone. The last double overtime game was an 86-78 win over Michigan State in 2002.
Wisconsin will play at UW-Milwaukee Wednesday.
