May 07, 2005 | Men's Golf
In Day 2 of the 2005 Big Ten Men's Golf Championships, at Wisconsin's University Ridge Golf Course, the Wisconsin men's golf team fell from the first day's tie for fifth to a tie for eighth with a team total 585 (292-293), Saturday.
Indiana's Jeff Overton tied the course record he set yesterday with a 7-under 65. His two-day total of 130 set a University Ridge course record for 36 holes by seven strokes. Wisconsin's Jon Turcott held the previous mark of 137. He carded the score at the Badger Invitational in 2001. Overton is on pace to set a Big Ten tournament record with his finish Sunday, his 36-hole finish tied the record set by Wisconsin's Ben Walter in 1994. His Hoosiers took a share of the team lead with a new University Ridge collegiate record 275 Saturday to tie Michigan State at 558 after 36 holes, also a course record.
Chasing the leader were Wisconsin's Garrett Jones (Rewey, Wis.) and Kevin Tassistro (Rosemont, Ill.), both at one over par in the tournament and for the day. The two stayed in step each shooting a 1-over 73, Saturday, and will begin the final day in a seven-way tie for 15th with a two-day total of 145. Also on the top-25 leader board is Adam DeLawyer (Deer River, Minn.) (75-71=146) in a tie for 22nd. He is two over in the tournament, but finished one under Saturday, the only Badger to come in under par.
Overton led Indiana to a team total 275 on Day 2 to capture the lead in the tournament heading into the final day. Not far behind, Michigan State shot a collective 277 and stationed two players on Overton's heels. Ryan Brehm matched Overton's performance shooting a record-tying 65 and Matt Harmon, in third, shot a 5-under 67.
In other UW results, Jeff Kaiser (Onalaska, Wis.) reported an 8-over 80 (54th) while Brian Brodell (Hortonville, Wis.) shot a 4-over 76 (T-41st).
Verona native and current Illini golfer Danny Zimmerman, shot a 5-over 77 on the day as his team trails the pack with 595 (300-295) for last place.
The teams tee off at 8 a.m. from both Holes 1 and 10 in the third and final round of the conference tournament.
