Michigan State Claims Big Ten Title, Wisconsin Finishes Seventh

The 2005 Big Ten Men's Golf Championship wrapped up Sunday with Michigan State claiming its second-ever Big Ten title with a 54-hole score of 847 (282, 276, 289) at Wisconsin's University Ridge. Michigan State's only other title came at the 1969 championship. Indiana senior Jeff Overton won the individual Big Ten title and was named Player of the Year after turning in a tournament record-tying and course record-setting 199 (65-65-69). The Badgers finished in seventh place with a team total of 875 (292-293-290).
For Wisconsin, senior Kevin Tassistro (Rosemont, Ill.) carded the Badgers' best score of the tournament with a 4-under 68. The mark also tied his career low score. Tassistro finished in a two-way tie for eighth with a tournament total 213 (72-73-68). Garrett Jones (Rewey, Wis.) finished five strokes behind his teammate with a 218 (72-73-73). Brian Brodell (Hortonville, Wis.) shaved three strokes off Saturday 's score to finish with a 222 (73-76-73). Sophomore Adam DeLawyer (Deer River, Minn.) shot a 226 (75-71-80) at the tournament while newcomer Jeff Kaiser (Onalaska, Wis.) rounded out the team with a 236 (80-80-76).
Tied for fourth place at the end of Day 2 and trailing by 16 strokes, Northwestern made a charge in the final day fueled by freshman Kyle Moore's day-best 66. With an 853 (294-280-279), the team came within one stroke of snatching the second-place honors from Indiana (283-275-294=852). Hot on Northwestern's heels was Minnesota with 854 (285-283-286).
On the leaderboard, finishing after Overton was Michigan State 's Ryan Brehm in second who shot a 203 (68-65-70) and in a tie for third, with a score of 209, was Matt Harmon of MSU (68-67-74) and Moore (72-71-66). Mark Leon of Penn State rounded out the top-five shooting a 210 (69-70-71).
Verona native, Danny Zimmerman shot a 234 (78-77-79) for 11th-place Illinois.
At an awards ceremony following the tournament Michigan State was presented with the tournament trophy. Brehm was awarded the Freshman of the Year award and head coach Mark Hankin was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year. Overton was selected as the Player of the Year for the second consecutive year.
