Schuman Wins State PGA Club Pro Championship Title
July 13, 2005 | Men's Golf
Badger men's golf coach Jim Schuman, already a two-time Wisconsin PGA Club Professional Champion, added a third state PGA championship Tuesday with a 3-under 213 at The Bull at Pinehurst Farms in Sheboygan Falls, Wis.
Schuman followed a 75 on Monday with a 2-under 70 Tuesday morning, and a 4-under 68 in the afternoon to secure the title by nine strokes over the next competitor. His steady play in the rain produced the only sub-par round of the afternoon. He collected four birdies and no bogeys in shooting his 68. His morning round of 70 was one of only two sub-par rounds on the Jack Nicklaus-designed course. Schuman also won the PGA stroke and match play titles in 2001 and 2002.
The second-year coach was earlier recognized in the spring as the 2005 Wisconsin Professional Golfers' Association of America Teacher of the Year. It was the second such award for Schuman in two years, earning the first honor in 2003. Schuman was cited by his peers for his meticulous analysis of the four areas of golf swing mechanics as the attribute which sets him apart from other candidates. He has helped innovate the profession with extensive use of videotape during instruction.
In just two seasons, the Madison native has invigorated the Wisconsin men's golf program which set a UW team season scoring record this past year by almost two strokes with 293.22 strokes per round. UW sophomore Garrett Jones of Rewey, Wis., who is a finalist this week in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, set the individual season scoring mark with 72.72 strokes per round.
