Wisconsin junior Garrett Jones carded rounds of 67 and 72 on the final day of the Wisconsin State Open to finish second with a 3-under 285 Wednesday on the Meadow Valleys Course at Blackwolf Run.
Jones, from Rewey, Wis., tied the course-record for a competitive round in the morning with his 67 and moved within two strokes of the lead with 18 holes remaining. He finished three strokes behind the winner, former Badger golfer Ben Walter, and posted the lowest total score among amateurs.
The second-place finish is the latest in a string of successes for Jones. Last month, Jones was a semifinalist in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, an event which began with nearly 5,000 players.
Jones also posted two second-place finishes for UW during the 2004-05 season en route to setting a new school record for season scoring average with 72.74 strokes per round. Jones has led Wisconsin in scoring average in both of his seasons with the team.
Fellow Badger Jeff Kaiser (Onalaska, Wis.) finished the tournament in a tie for 32nd place with a 12-over 300 (72-75-76-77). The sophomore was second on the team in scoring average last season and earned a second-place finish at the Hawkeye Intercollegiate in just his third meet as a Badger.
Wisconsin head men's golf coach Jim Schuman, winner of the 2005 Wisconsin PGA Club Pro Championship held last month, finished in a tie for 18th place with a five-over 293 (74-71-71-77).
Former Badgers Jon Turcott, David Roesch and Brian Brodell also had strong outings. Turcott tied for third place with a 1-under 287, Roesch finished in a tie for fifth with an even-par 288 and Brodell, who closed out his UW career in May, tied for 22nd at 7-over 295.
Jones, Kaiser and the Badgers open up the 2005-06 season Sept. 12-13 at the Central Preview in Cleveland.
