
Siow Leads UW on Day 1 of SMU Classic

The University of Wisconsin's 13th-ranked swimming and diving team claimed one title and captured two top-three finishes in the relays to take third place with 142 points after the first day of competition of the SMU Classic at Perkins Natatorium.
The Badgers are just 26 points from the first-place Mustangs, who lead the six-team meet that features eight swimmers and one diver from each school.
'I thought we had some pretty good performances tonight,' head coach Eric Hansen said. 'I'm pleased with how we fared, but I think we can perform better tomorrow.'
In the evening's second event, Yi Ting Siow won the 400-yard IM with an NCAA 'B' time of 4:15.88, which was a whopping 7.44 seconds faster than the second-place swimmer. The sophomore also reeled off a 'B' time in the 100-yard breaststroke after claiming second with a time of 1:03.60.
UW also got points from the 400-yard medley relay team of Susan Johnson, Siow, Christine Zwiegers and Hannah McClurg, all of whom combined to take third with a mark of 3:48.34, and from the 800-yard freestyle relay team of Jen Illescas, Johnson, Gabby Maddalena and McClurg, all of whom earned second with a time of 7:33.48.
Illescas went on to post second place in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.12) and fifth in the 100-yard butterfly (57.88), while Johnson notched third in the 100-yard backstroke (57.76) and Jackie Vavrek placed fourth in the 50-yard freestyle (23.83).
In other results, Andrea Wiesner won the 400-yard IM consolation final (4:25.17) and finished fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke consolation final (1:06.25), Maddalena took sixth in the 200-yard freestyle consolation final (1:54.59), Zwiegers grabbed fifth in the 100-yard butterfly consolation final (58.30) and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle consolation final (24.78) and Vavrek was fifth in the 100-yard backstroke consolation final (1:00.01).
In diving, Jenny Hawkins scored 238.55 points to claim fourth on the 1-meter board. She will compete on the 3-meter board tomorrow.
'Jenny dived pretty well, especially against such tough competition,' diving coach Tom Michael said. 'She's holding her own and feeling confident.'
The Badgers conclude competition at 7:30 p.m. Saturday when the 200 free relay, the 500 free, the 200 back, the 200 breast, the 100 free, the 200 fly, the 200 IM and the 200 free relay are held.
