The University of Wisconsin's women's swimming and diving team, ranked 13th nationally, finished third with 288 points at the SMU Classic held at Perkins Natatorium in Dallas. The Badgers were led by sophomore Yi Ting Siow who won two events and earned the meet's "High Point Swimmer" award.
The Badgers finished just 40 points from the first-place Mustangs, who won the six-team meet that features eight swimmers and one diver from each school.
"The team really competed well," head coach Eric Hansen said. "We came down here to get some quality preparation for the rest of the season. I thought we responded well, and I'm, pleased with how we swam."
The Badgers top-finisher was Siow who won the 200-yard IM with an NCAA 'A ' of 2:00.01 and the 200-yard breaststroke with an NCAA 'B' time of 2:14.80. Siow also won Friday's 400-yard IM consolation final with an NCAA 'B' time of 4:15.88, 7.44 seconds faster than the second-place swimmer, while also placing second in Friday's 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.60).
Gabby Maddalena and Susan Johnson both claimed second in both the 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard backstroke, respectively. Maddalena finished with a time of 4:54.84 while Johnson missed the victory by hundredths of a second when she registered an NCAA 'B' time of 1:59.41.
Wisconsin's 200-yard free relay placed second. The team featuring Hannah McClurg, Jackie Vavrek, Christine Zwiegers and Johnson registered an NCAA 'A ' time of 1:35.19.
Other swimmers gaining points for UW were McClurg and Jen Illescas. McClurg placed fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (52.17) while Illescas placed third in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:03.65.
In diving, freshman Jenny Hawkins followed yesterday's fourth place finish on the 1-meter board (238.55) with a sixth place finish on the 3-meter board (227.80) Saturday.
The Badgers are back in action when they travel to Tucson, Ariz., for a 3-team triangular meet with Arizona and UCSB Nov.3-4.
