October 23, 2006 | Men's Golf
The Wisconsin men's golf team shot a 596 (300-296), and trails UCLA by only two strokes, to hold on to second-place at the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge Monday, at the par-71, 6,633-yard Pacific Dunes in Bandon, Ore.
Junior Jeff Kaiser (Onalska, Wis.) led the way for UW as he currently sits in second place, three strokes behind USC's Jamie Lovmark. Kaiser shot a first-round 75 and followed with a one-under par 70 in the second round. If Kaiser can gain the lead and win tomorrow, it would be his first collegiate tournament victory.
Sophomore Dan Woltman (Beaver Dam, Wis.) shot a 74 in the first round and a 75 in the second to give him a first day total of 149, and a tie for ninth place. Fellow sophomore Tyler Obermueller (River Falls, Wis.) and senior Garrett Jones (Rewey, Wis.) are both tied for 24th with 153. Obermueller shot a 75 in the first round and a 78 in the second. Jones, meanwhile, came back from his first-round 80 to shoot a two-over par 73 in the afternoon.
Jordan Elsen (Kenosha, Wis.) was not too far behind as his first-day total 155 (76-79) has him tied for 33rd place.
In the conference challenge portion of the tournament, the Pac-10 currently holds a slim 16 stroke lead over the Big Ten 3,015-3,031. This portion of the tournament is scored by having each conference count its lowest five team scores of each round.
The Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge concludes with the final 18 holes Tuesday beginning at 8:30 a.m.
