Badger Harriers Retain Top Ranking
October 06, 2006 | Men's Cross Country
The Wisconsin men's cross country team remained in the No. 1 spot of the latest U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll released Tuesday. A unanimous No.1 choice in the previous pole, the Badgers garnered 14 out of 15 first place votes this week, with Arkansas taking the sole remaining vote.
Rounding out this week's top 10 are Stanford, Colorado, Iona, Oregon, Arizona, Portland, BYU and Oklahoma State.
While Wisconsin and Arkansas retained their grip on the top two spots, the rest of the poll experienced a significant shake-up, with North Carolina State and Oregon making the biggest jumps.
The Wolfpack debuted this week at 13 after the team's surprising victory at last week's Notre Dame Invitational. In the event, then-unranked North Carolina State fended off six top 30 squads, including No. 1 Wisconsin, to win the team title with 86 points.
The Ducks rose eleven spots to sixth on the heels of their victory at the Bill Dellinger Invitational in Eugene. At the meet, the Ducks placed three runners in the top seven to win the team title with 47 points, besting No.8 Portland, No. 9 BYU, No. 17 Alabama and No. 23 Texas.
Texas, ranked sixth going into the meet, dropped to 23rd after their disappointing ninth place finish at the Dellinger.
The Big Ten Conference is represented by three other teams in the poll, with Minnesota (No.12), Michigan (No. 14) and Ohio State (No.22) also placing in the top 30.
The Badgers will not race again until Oct. 14th when they head to the Jim Drews Invitational in La Crosse, Wis. The meet is slated to begin at 10:30 a.m.
